Gerald L. Walden, Jr. is the Assistant General Counsel for The Fresh Market, Inc., a specialty grocery store retailer with its corporate office located in Greensboro, North Carolina. During his employment with the company, Mr. Walden has been responsible for reviewing and negotiating commercial real estate leases and contracts, assisting with companywide labor and employment matters, managing any claims in litigation, and procuring alcohol licenses for the company’s over 170 stores. Mr. Walden joined The Fresh Market, Inc. in 2004 following judicial clerkships at the North Carolina Court of Appeals in the chambers of both Judge Hugh B. Campbell, Jr. (2001-02) and Judge Robert C. Hunter (2002-04).

A 1996 summa cum laude graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Mr. Walden worked as a Manufacturing Engineer for Siemens prior to attending law school. He subsequently received his law degree from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law in 2001 with honors. While a law student, Mr. Walden served as the Comments Editor of the NCCU Law Review and as President of his law school class during his 2L and 3L years. He obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Elon University in 2014.

Since the Spring of 2011, Mr. Walden has served as the Director of NCCU School of Law’s General Externship Program. Additionally, he is actively involved in the community serving, for example, as a member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s (NCBA) Board of Governors, the Greensboro Bar Association’s Board of Directors, the NCCU School of Law’s Board of Governors and the Guilford County Association of Black Lawyers (currently serving as President). As a result of his contributions to the North Carolina legal profession and his community, Mr. Walden received the NCBA’s Citizen Lawyer Award (2013), was recognized as a Leader in the Law by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly (2015), and was selected by his peers as the Legal Elite winner in the Corporate Counsel category published by Business North Carolina magazine (2017).
