DeKiah N. Baxter is an early graduating junior currently enrolled at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. At Spelman, she majors in Political Science and minors in Economics. Upon graduation in December 2019, she plans to pursue her Juris Doctorate from a top tier law school. During her first year, DeKiah served as a State Representative Intern for House Representative Patty Bentley at the Georgia State Capitol. During her second year, she was chosen to attend Spelman on the Hill, an advocacy program that sends Spelman students to Capitol Hill to lobby for or against legislation that directly or indirectly impacts their lives. As a result of the connections she built on the Hill, she returned to Washington, D.C. in the Summer of 2018 to complete an internship in Congressman Al Green’s office. DeKiah also attended the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit in Atlanta for the first time during her second year in undergrad. She believes that in order to have an impact, one has to practice what she preaches and go after her dreams, no matter who says she can’t.

Since 2016, DeKiah has given back to her community by engaging with youth through service initiatives. This year, DeKiah took her passion and decided to develop HER Academy, an organization focused on uplifting, engaging, and impacting young girls to become well-rounded, business-minded, and spiritually aligned. If she were to give youth one piece of advice it would be to read more and live life through the lens of others. DeKiah believes that by doing these things youth become more intelligent and empathetic to the feelings of those around them to better impact their communities. She plans to utilize her law degree in the corporate field and do pro bono legal work in her hometown (Rock Hill, SC) that impacts youth and families in a positive way.
